    I have always been frustrated by MS Project and made my charts in Excel but it is so time consuming and looks awful so three years ago I decided to see if I could solve this problem and built Tom's Planner Gantt chart Software. I just launched it's beta version. You can try it for free. I think it is a lot easier to use than using Excel. Plus it enables you to share your charts online or export them to ms project which you will not be able to do using Excel.
