My Journey to Canada: From International Student to Permanent Resident
When I boarded a nearly empty flight to Canada in 2021, the world was still in the grip of COVID-19. Borders were tight, travel felt uncertain, and every decision carried an extra layer of worry. Yet beneath the masks and restrictions, I carried something stronger than fear: hope for a new beginning through education.
Taking the Leap as an International Student
My dream of studying in Canada had been years in the making. The country’s reputation for world-class education and multicultural campuses drew me in, but the pandemic added an unpredictable twist. Getting my study permit meant endless paperwork, last-minute health requirements, and constantly changing travel rules. I learned to be flexible and patient, even when it felt like the goalpost kept moving.
Landing in a Different World
Arriving in 2021 meant strict quarantine, health checks, and limited in-person interactions. Instead of exploring bustling streets or meeting classmates right away, I spent my first two weeks isolating in a small apartment, attending virtual orientation sessions and getting to know Canada through a laptop screen. It was lonely at times, but it also gave me space to reflect on how far I’d come and what I wanted for the future.
Life as a Student in a New Country
Once restrictions eased, campus life slowly came alive. I discovered the joy of small-group classes, late-night study sessions, and friendships that crossed cultures and continents. Adapting to a Canadian winter was another adventure—my first real snowfall felt magical and intimidating all at once. Each challenge, from understanding public transit to balancing part-time work and studies, became a lesson in independence.
From Graduate to Permanent Resident
After finishing my program, I transitioned to a post-graduation work permit and started building my professional experience in Canada. Those years of hard work and careful planning paved the way for the next milestone: permanent residency.
In 2025, after countless documents, emails, and patient waiting, I received the email I had dreamed of—my electronic Confirmation of Permanent Residence (eCOPR). The moment I saw the approval, relief and gratitude washed over me. It was more than a status change; it was a symbol of every challenge overcome.
Lessons From the Journey
Patience is power. Immigration rarely moves as quickly as we hope, and pandemic delays tested me at every step.
Community matters. From classmates who shared notes to newcomer networks offering guidance, support came in many forms.
Resilience grows quietly. Each small obstacle—cold weather, new customs, late-night deadlines—built a confidence I didn’t know I had.
Looking Ahead
Moving to Canada as a student during a global crisis taught me that beginnings don’t have to be perfect to be powerful. Today, as a proud permanent resident, I look back with gratitude and forward with excitement. Canada isn’t just where I earned a degree; it’s where I built a life, discovered new strengths, and found a home.
